Derby and District Astronomical Society

DDAS 50th Anniversary Open Day
Saturday 10th August 2024

On Saturday 10th August 2024 the Derby & District Astronomical Society held an Open Day to mark our 50th anniversary year. The event was held at our usual meeting venue at The Friends Meeting House, St. Helen's Street, Derby from 10 am till 4 pm. Three parallel activities took place - an exhibition, a series of talks, and activities for young people. The exhibition included the society's moon globe, which is signed by some of the Apollo astronauts, a sale of books on astronomy and space, telescopes and accessories for sale, spacecraft and planet models, Society memorabilia, the club's 8" 'JK-40' Dobsonian, the Society's meteorite collection, a live radio astronomy demo, displays of DDAS member's astrophotography and the history of the club's Flamsteed Observatory. Also on display was a collection of memorabilia from the late Ken Stevens, a local amateur radio astronomer, who in the 1960s from his house in Littleover, Derby was the first person to map the Milky Way in radio waves. The series of talks was opened by Emeritus Professor Jonathan Powers' presentation on Local Astronomy Before the Stone Circles. This was followed by an introduction to the solar system by Tony Razzell. Mike Lancaster gave a talk on the night sky and Martin Griffiths rounded off the day by talking on Our Current Search for Life Elsewhere. The young people's activities included an International Space Station docking simulation, demos, and a 'working' model of a black hole! The Society offered half price membership to anyone who wished to join the club on the day, and we signed up six new people as a result. Book and telescope sales were also quite successful. The DDAS is most grateful to the members who put together the exhibition and helped out, speakers and visitors who attended, and to The Friends Meeting House for allowing us to book the building for the day.
