Derby and District Astronomical Society

Alvaston Park Stargazing
Saturday 25th January 2025

On Saturday, 25th January 2025, the Derby & District Astronomical Society, together with Derby Parks and Alvaston Park Friends once again hosted an evening of stargazing in Alvaston Park, Derby, which for more than a decade has been an annual event. This was probably the most successful of these events so far, attracting a huge crowd of visitors, and being blessed by clear skies and a medley of four bright planets to view. We had around 7 telescopes of various types and sizes set up on the sports field, delighting visitors of all ages with stunning views of Saturn, Venus, Jupiter and Mars, as well as a few other objects such as the Orion Nebula. Meanwhile inside the Pavillion we had a collection of exhibits including our Moon globe, a meteorite collection, models of the planets and space probes, and a static telescope exhibit. The Moon globe especially is a crowd puller, as it is covered in signatures from some of the Apollo astronauts and other space celebrities. Many thanks to all those DDAS members who helped on the evening, and to Derby Parks and Alvaston Park Friends. Here is a selection of photos from the event.
